A bursting summer’s wave of sunshine and warmth, London’s vibrant festivals, shows and music ???? all got us excited as we stepped onto London Victoria.
The magic of the 90’s with a flood of romantic novels and movies- Ghost, Pretty woman, Sleepless in Seattle, While you were sleeping and so on … and then there was Titanic on huge screen driving our hearts into this pervading atmosphere of glorious love!

“Titanic” Live playing at The Royal Albert Hall received splendid reviews and so reliving that moment from decades ago caught us on.

The Royal Albert Hall is majestic, humongous, aesthetically grand with amazing acoustics, the summer shows there are always lively and lovely living beyond our expectations.

Inside Royal Albert Hall (RAH)

We looked forward to the live music and singing performed by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and our Trinity school choir.

The early evening drew in crowds to feel this experience as we took seats to enjoy the movie in a packed kaleidoscopic hall.

The blue purple canopy inside the flamboyant RAH

There was this great exciting anticipation that came across from the crowds, it felt surreal.
The swivel seats made it easy to sit in position turned towards the screen and as the lights dimmed the hall got into a pin drop silence….

The orchestra was seated below the screen

Musicians and singers took seats on stage before the movie began and then finally the conductor Ludwig Wicki presented himself onto the stage accompanied by a striking applause!

The orchestra opened with the 20th century fox fanfare which was delivered in great style with suave… we all went wow!!
As the movie began the soloist Alice Zawadzki opened the score vocals title track with poignance and ease evoking a spirited sensation to come alive, the audience cheered in amazement at the end of that score …

As the movie played on we realised the impact of live music which was so fascinating and sublime to hear. The brilliant conducting by Ludwig Wicki and the music excellently performed by The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra made justice to the composer James Horner’s timeless score.
James Horner was known for the integration of choral and electronic elements, and for his frequent use of motifs associated with Celtic music

It was hard to believe that the music was being played live until one looked below, there was great accuracy, attention to detail and the music style felt ethereal in delivering emotions.
Truly great music to hear!!

Ludwig Wicki conducting.. smooth and easy!

The Trinity school choir were seated right at the top almost under the screen. They sang fabulously all the choruses sounding angelic and their rendition gave the scores that multidimensional appeal like an icing on a grand cake.
This was where senses could relate with emotions, a very enjoyable moment indeed!

It seems only yesterday when we were young and had a dream…. watching the cast once again after years I could not help reminiscing the decades flown by…Young Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet once again set the magic on screen after all !

The audience (that’s including us)in the hall applauded in unison, in genuine adulation we laughed, cheered more and went silent too as the scores smoothly flowed from one emotion to the next, the music arrangements and instruments were unbelievable!

Crowds engrossed in silence as the hero saves the maiden in distress the first time

Eric Rigler played the Uilleann Pipes and Whistles rendering a mournful and soul touching Celtic atmosphere and vocal soloist Alice Zawadzki also played strings (a multi talented artist).
The track that was played during the scene where Rose (Kate) and Jack (Leonardo) danced- the hall truly came alive with elation as the audience cheered after cheerful Celtic themed pieces were played and they continued to go on…

It almost felt like I was watching Titanic for the first time…I was truly taken by surprise by the Live music and it’s various moods of scores that were reverberating in the acoustics and then there was the interval.

A perspective from the stage through the musicians to the audience

The movie continued after the interval more than pleasantly… as the story’s tragedy unfolded the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra with it’s many small ensembles forming the great big orchestra played the many emotive variations fabulously. Each ensemble (brass, woodwind, strings etc) delivered their scores with awesome dynamics and modulation. The nuances and subtleties in pitch, tone, sound and rhythm made it a fantastic unforgettable experience!

Legend has it that as the ship sank the orchestra on board the real Titanic played the hymn “Nearer my God to thee”, the saved few would live to retell this side of the story.
Towards the end of the movie all the music scores especially “Nearer my God to thee” got us emotional and reflective, extremely well delivered by the string soloists.

The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and all performers received a standing ovation over some curtain calls albeit in this case sans curtains, to mention much credit to the brilliant conducting by Ludwig Wicki and the efforts of all performers, so very well done!

Performers receive a standing ovation

The end theme song threw the crowds in a deep trance applauding endlessly as Alice Zawadzki sang “My heart will go on…” brilliant voice that was quite evocative, powerfully and stupendously delivered !

A panoramic view of the Royal Albert Hall as we leave…

In all a truly worthwhile and enjoyable experience that left us with mesmerising expressions in awe as we stepped onto the stage to congratulate Alice Zawadzki and the performers that were left on.
So looking forward to more live cinematic hits at the RAH, a one of a kind experience !!!
