A highly popular and universally spoken of museum, this dome of an enclosure holds some unique famous personalities and political figures together with iconic group characters modelled in full size wax!
We looked forward to a legacy of hand made wax models that might have been carried through decades if not centuries.
With over 200 years of history that speaks ‘figuratively’ when prototypes hand modelled by Madame Tussaud were wowed by royalty and political groups which later caused a historic trend! Today every old and new piece holds history and culture in art work which are defined with meticulous curiosity and charm!
Brief; Madame Tussaud (maiden name Marie Grosholtz) was born in Strasbourg where her wax art busts caught the social eye …and later she travelled to Paris under the patronage of the King Louis XVl as a tutor to his sister in Versailles. Later she moved to Paris on the eve of the revolution and after being released from prison she was asked to make death masks of the executed nobles and royals that included her former employees the king and queen of France.
In 1802 Madam Tussauds moved to the British Isles and years later established her base with the help of her sons at “The Baker Street Bazar”
Her modelled wax figures received much popularity and thus her work grew to fame and fortune!
We found it best to book tickets online as it is fast tracked to avoid waiting in queues, you can club other attractions such as the London Eye and save…
It was over a decade on my last visit to the museum when we came here with family from India, how the years had flown by like a fast reel and it seemed surreal stepping back into this museum. Much had changed at Tussauds, well we thought it would also be entertaining to bring visiting family back again interested in catching that aura of London.
Entering the chandelier lit foyer we were amazed with the digital backdrop, its innovative setting took us by surprise. Entering further we glided into the ‘Red carpet’ experience area complete with a wax doll photographer and a centre stage for receiving awards, it felt like a movie scene coming alive! Visitors were inviting themselves to stand on the stage by Benedict Cumberbatch (in wax) recreating an award receiving scene, people were having so much fun posing while taking selfies by the pedestal .
A plethora of celebrity wax models appeared in their specific setting areas right from film stars, politicians, major personalities and also royalty; visitors rushed with levity towards their favourite wax models to snap up as many pics. The strategically displayed attractions held massive tourist interest especially from Hollywood’s Brad Pitt and Angelina to Bollywood’s Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra that stood wrapped in all glitz and glamour!
Celebs from across the world were displayed at intervals allowing visitors to grab selfies in complete excitement and wonder. We walked past The Brangelinas, The Beckhams and so on, the wax models came close to the real thing albeit not all.
Strolling towards a corner I seen something that was from a bygone film era coming to mind, it took me back decades when young watching that movie ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ with friends, a chick flick of Audrey Hepburn fans.
With a backdrop replicating the movie a charming model of Audrey Hepburn was presented sitting in chic black do with her tiara!
Straddling and strolling along many genres of wax creations it was thrilling to be transported into this make believe set up, even though we knew they were only wax yet it brought back many memories of younger days with friends and family.
This time around we found Tussauds layout interactively seeking visitor participation. There was a throne chair by Helen Mirren’s wax model to sit over and take snapshots.
The star studded displays carried on with fans posing for this much coveted for selfies. My stars included Dame Judi Dench, Morgan Freeman, Tom Cruise and Helen Mirren’s “Queen for a day” throne enclosure.
Dwayne Johnson seemed too close to real that many visitors could not turn away but take selfies upon selfies????
Movie scene-set areas; there were a few famous blockbuster movie scenes recreated for fans, directed by master directors including Steven Spielberg’s, Alfred Hitchcock’s and so on…Ridley Scott’s Alien horror route was quite the creative, there was this setting to mimic the thrilling scene from that movie as one entered an enclosure. It became a curious favourite especially for teenagers hovering and screaming as they went in.
Fantasy walking into Star world- Star Wars fans beware …“the force awaits you”????
Meet Yoda in an atmospheric seating, take a seat in the push button warship with Chewbacca and R2-D2, say hello to princess Leia seated on her large comfy couch, and lastly a definite photo stop with dark rider or engage yourself in saber combat pic with Skywalker.
A humongous setting awaits King Kong lovers, the “King Kong skull island” attraction complete with huge animated head blow up; all amid tropical flora setting, children flocked around amazed and uncertain about its wax authenticity…
The 007 Bond Attraction- we could not move but simply stare at the click of Bonds lined up, from Roger Moore to Timothy Dalton, Daniel Craig to Pierce Brosnan and more… a fantasy in wax for all Bond lovers celebrating its way, needless to say ‘For your eyes only…’
Further on for those interested in the technique of wax figurines there is an area customised for experiencing the wax model creations in the making, you could experience making your own wax hands with an extra fee…
Then there is the Kiddies corner with Shrek and Tinker Bell for little ones, there are some amazing electronic creations to entice little ones should their interest run out.
There was a shop for coffee and snack area whose prices soared through the roof, thoughts ran ‘best visit the museum on a full stomach’.
For sports fans there is another dedicated section taking us into ‘Wembley Stadium’ with figurines of legendary personalities; Muhammad Ali, Anthony Joshua, Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Rafael Nadal, Lewis Hamilton and of course Usain Bolt and many more.
Then there was an area for Fashion week’s Modelling corner where posing got easy for fans and admirers photoshopping.
The Royal corner with William Shakespeare by Queen Elizabeth I took us outside our era with a lovely colourful setting.
There was a grand royal section that offered us paid photos alongside the wax figures of the royal family.
At one side on elevated display stood the Royal family; Queen Elizabeth II, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, although this arrangement and setting has now changed after the death of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles’ accession to the throne.
There was also the model of Late Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip displayed on the opposite side, (our visit was in 2022) sadly it might now have the late queen by his side.
We passed by other personalities including political heroes and leaders including Winston Churchill, while we also searched for Mahatma Gandhi’s figure but we were informed that it had been moved to another Tussaud’s museum for display. So the wax figures are moved or rotated ever so often between museums and that was a shame as we missed seeing our other favourite wax models the Beetles and Amitabh Bachan. Then further down was the wax figure of Boris Johnson, yet by this time the charm for his wax figure won some boos by visitors.
Soon followed the Pop and music corner – British female pop group “Little Mix” was a favourite among teenagers together with other famous singers; Kylie Minogue, Amy Winehouse, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Ed Sheeran From the older section more figures with their typical stage settings included Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Freddy Mercury and so on.
Towards the end of the trip there is a lovely ride called “The Spirit of London”, it is a brilliant ride taking visitors in tiny mini cabs along railings through exciting historical settings.
London’s history comes vividly alive with this display- a brilliant narration through art. Witness the historical, cultural and political events that shaped London. I loved this part the best in Madame Tussauds, it felt childlike hopping into these miniature iconic cabs to experience a rich history portrayed in colourful wax models and inspiring settings, a must see!
Stepping into 400 years history of London with background sounds that unfold history- the ride commenced with an elevated model placed up high of Queen Elizabeth 1 enthroned in gold holding an orb, then as the cab ride turned it took us into the colourful London city life with jesters, clowns, pedlars, minstrels and bards performing feats on the streets of London and complete with William Shakespeare writing plays…
Soon our mini cabs turned into the “Ring a ring a roses” corner taking us into the plague era of a deadly endemic with animated rats and plague victims depicted lying on carts …
Then followed the scene of the great fire of London with King Charles II holding plans for rebuilding the city.
Further on the enclosure was packed with sets and wax model figures of the ensuing Battle of Trafalgar transporting us into Lord Nelson’s victory moment, then moving into the Dickens corner with Oliver Twist pleading “Please sir, can I have some more”
Further on followed the Great War scenes and sounds of world war II; with Sir Winston Churchill giving directions, announcing over radio rallying the British people… and then to scenes of liberty and peace, it was an enriching ride!
Getting off from our mini cab rides we were led into the Marvel “Hall of Heroes”, bringing to mind the original Stan Lee era ( still remember reading those comic books), yet now recreated at Madame Tussaud’s with more comprehensive modern character additions and complete with a 4D theatre.
Step into the Marvel world of heroes that are seen defeating villains; meet Hulk, Captain America, Iron man, Spider man, Hawk eye, Thor, Ant-man the Wasp and so on… Kids wound around the railing wrapping their arms around a gigantic finger of Hulk!
Visitors enjoyed the 4 D experience under the domed theatre packed with hidden entertaining features… get ready, wear your 3D glasses and experience a fantasy world of marvel with gigantic heroes walking towards you, then some surprise mists, frizz, puffs of smoke, flashing lights and vibrations as the 8 minute film transports you into this action filled marvel world!
The visit to Madame Tussaud’s was still fascinating after all those years, its atmosphere was kept energetic and enthralling for all ages. Every year visitors flock here from all over the world to enjoy that experience of something so creative and entertaining…. so we left the museum smiling and hoping that Mahatma Gandhi returns on our next visit to the museum!
